BACKGROUND:

Background

On December 20th 2023, crews from Engine 63, Medic 63, and Tower 65, faced an unprecedented challenge. Tasked with preventing a fire from spreading to the second story of a home, they encountered a situation unlike any before. Amidst their firefighting efforts, these crews faced an active threat from a shooter inside the home, who was deliberately setting fires to destroy his property while in an active standoff with Sheriff’s deputies.

Despite the imminent danger, these brave crews remained resolute in containing the fire. Once the individual was outside of the structure, crews treated him like they would any other patient, and worked diligently to provide advanced life-saving measures.

The outcome of this call could have been very different if it weren’t for the support and bravery of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. These deputies protected our firefighters with their armored vehicle, ballistic shields, and themselves.

The City of Deltona is extremely proud of our firefighters and VSO deputies. Their teamwork on that day allowed everyone to go home safe.
